Gujrat Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced an eight per cent increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) of Gujarat Government employees with effect from January 1, 2010. This takes the allowance to 35 per cent from the existing 27 equivalent to the DA rate of central government employees.
The increased DA will be disbursed in cash from April 1 while the difference in the DA for the period from Jan 1 to March 31 this year would be deposited in their Provident Fund Accounts. Modi also announced a similar 8 percent increase in the DA of pensioners on a temporary basis.
The state government employees have given 15 days’ time to the authorities to fulfil their demands seeking implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations or be ready for intensified protest in the coming days.
Gujarat State Employees Coordination Committee (GSECC) spokesman R A Patel said the coordination committee of the government employees will meet in Gandhinagar in a week to chalk out the future course of action.
Patel said the details of the future protest programmes cannot not be disclosed at present, but they will be intensified to get the demands met.
Over eight lakh state government employees seem to be in no mood to compromise with the state government over the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.
They have decided to take out a rally from Sardar Baug at Lal Darwaza to Navrangpura on December 6 to mount pressure on the government for its implementation.
Vishnu Patel, the president of the Gujarat State Employees Coordination Committee (GSECC), that the employees will not accept anything but implementation of the recommendations in toto.
He said the government had implemented the recommendations only partially, which was not acceptable to the employees.
Patel said the government had promised to implement the pay panel report just before the last Lok Sabha elections, but it had been delaying it on one pretext or the other.

From September 1 the state government has promised to implement the sixth pay commission for college and university professors.
This was stated by KS Shastri President of Gujarat State Federation of University and College Teachers' Association. Shastri said that the federation has met education minister Ramanlal Vora and finance minister Vajubhai Vala and it was decided that the sixth pay commission would be implemented from September 1. The resolution for the same will be out by August 15, said Shastri.
He said that the sixth pay commission was already in implementation for all other government employees except professors. He further said that about 10,000 employees would benefit. A professor who has put in 16 years of service will get an hike of about 65-70 per cent in salary while the average hike will be around 40 per cent, claimed Shastri.
