Bringing an end to the more than a month-long protest by college teachers, the state government has been finally approved UGC pay scale for them.
A government resolution (GR) in this regard was issued by the state government on Friday. College teachers went on a strike as the state government earlier insisted on implementing its own pay scale.
On October 30, teachers and state government had struck a truce and it was announced informally that UGC pay scale will be implemented.
On November 11, the first GR was issued but with a number of anomalies. On November 20, the government said that the GR will have to be revised. More than 15,000 teachers in Gujarat will be benefited with hike ranging between Rs 15,000 and 20,000.
Professor KS Shastri, president of Gujarat State University and College Teachers' Association said, "A college teacher who has completed three years in selection grade should be given a pay scale ranging between Rs 37,400 and 63,000 and a academic grade pay of Rs 9,000. However, the GR issued on November 11 had errors on this issue which was not acceptable to us."
"The new GR has corrected the anomaly. In keeping with our demands, the government has also done away with a clause that sought to treat college teachers as government employees," added Shastri.
However, the demand to extend teachers' retirement age to 65 has been turned down. The age for retirement will remain 62, teachers with PhD and MPhil degrees will not be given any increment. Of the 14 states that have implemented UGC pay scale, none have agreed to these two recommendations.
