Government Doctors resign over pay disparity

Posted by binu P Friday, October 2, 2009

Over 4,000 government doctors in Karnataka have quit their jobs demanding better pay. But the state government has put off the issue saying it would be resolved till the end of the week.

General duty medical doctors are paid Rs 18,500 a month right now. But the doctors are demanding a salary of Rs 35,000. Senior doctors want at least Rs 25,000 more than they are being paid. An increment in salary is not the only demand of the doctors. There are other demands as well.

The association is demanding a salary of Rs 35,000 for the beginners which will help fill all the 2028 vacancies and 8 to 10 doctors deputed per hospital. Currently there is only one doctor per 16,000 patients in Karnataka
